Student Involvement

Undergraduate students will be learning to operating the LIDAR equipment. Graduate students will be learning to program data manipulation algorithms

Project Objective
To measure the thickness of concrete material removed by hydro mining and manual scaling (MODOT project) on 2 lanes each of 3 MODOT bridges up to 1000’ long, using before and after LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scans and developing change detection algorithms.

Project Abstract
We propose to measure the thickness of the removed concrete material as a result of hydrodemolition (and manual removal) using before and after LIDAR measurements and adapting/developing change detection algorithms.

Relationship to other Research/Projects

GPR data is related to the MODOT/UMC/MST Bridge Project.

Transportation-Related Keywords

Hydro mining, LIDAR, thickness

Technology Transfer Activities

Method details and algorithms will be made available to MODOT

Project Deliverables

Plan view maps of the elevation difference between pre and post hydrodemolition surfaces, precision is expected to be less than 1 cm.

Anticipated Benefits

1) Develop a methodology and prove the concept for this kind of
measurement, and 2) compare to pre hydro mining GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) data (furnished by another project) to evaluate the ability to predict the degree of distress using GPT
